5 Signs Your Website Is Costing You Customers

Most small business owners check their website the way most people check their own handwriting — they wrote it, so it looks fine to them. But a visitor sees it cold, on a phone, usually in a hurry, often already comparing you to two other businesses in other tabs. If any of the five things below are true, some of those visitors are leaving before they ever get in touch.

1. It takes more than a couple of seconds to load

Every extra second your site takes to load costs you visitors — not eventually, immediately. Someone searching on their phone in a car park outside a job isn't going to wait around for a hero image to finish loading. If your site feels sluggish to you on a good wifi connection at your desk, it's worse than that for most of your actual visitors.

2. There's no phone number they can see without hunting

A lot of small business sites bury the phone number in a "Contact" page three clicks deep, or leave it out entirely in favour of a contact form. Plenty of people — especially anyone who wants something sorted today, like a tradesperson call-out — will simply leave and call the next result on Google instead of filling in a form and waiting for a reply.

3. It doesn't work properly on a phone

Most of your traffic is mobile, whether or not that matches how you look at your own site. Text that's too small to read without zooming, buttons too close together to tap accurately, or a layout that requires horizontal scrolling — any of these will quietly push people away, usually without you ever finding out it happened.

4. There's no clear next step

"Get a Quote," "Book Now," "Call Us" — whatever fits your business, visitors need one obvious thing to click that isn't buried in a paragraph of text. If someone has to think about what they're supposed to do next, most won't bother working it out.

5. It doesn't show up when people search for what you do

A beautifully designed website that nobody finds is still a website that isn't earning its keep. Basics like a proper page title, a real description, and Google actually being able to read your content matter more than most business owners realise — and they're usually the first thing to get skipped when a site's built in a rush.
